What Actually Happens When You Call a Rehab Center?

Quick answer: A first call to BetterChoice is a confidential conversation with an admissions specialist — typically 10 to 20 minutes. We ask about the substance, how long, how much, your health, and your insurance. We never ask for anything that could get back to your employer, we never pressure you to commit, and calling obligates you to nothing. Many people call several times before they are ready. That is normal, and we treat it that way.
Minute by minute
The first two minutes. A member of our admissions team answers. You can use just a first name. Many callers start with "I'm calling for information" or "this is for someone else." Both are fine; both are often the caller themselves, and we know that, and it does not matter.
The middle of the call. We ask what is going on: which substances, how long, how much, when you last used, any medical conditions or medications, and whether you have been through withdrawal before. These are medical questions, not judgments — the answers determine what level of care is safe for you, especially for alcohol and benzodiazepines, where detox needs real medical supervision.
The insurance part. If you have your card handy, we take the details and verify your benefits directly with the plan — for free; timing depends on the plan. You will get the reported benefits and an estimated out-of-pocket cost before you decide anything; it is not a guarantee of payment. If you are a union member, your health fund benefits often cover more than you expect.
The end of the call. You get a clear picture of the recommended next step and what it costs. Then you decide. Same-day admission may be possible, depending on screening, bed availability and benefits; if you are not ready, you leave with information and a number to call back.
What we never do
- Notify your employer, your union, or anyone else — federal law protects treatment confidentiality, with extra protections for substance use records
- Pressure you with sales tactics or fear
- Charge anything for the call or the benefit verification
